PTSA Advocacy Update: close the school funding gap
Investing in education is investing in our future, yet BSD and schools statewide are struggling financially. Legislative funding hasn’t kept pace with rising costs, leading to staff cuts, reduced programs, and fewer essential services. Lawmakers must fulfill their constitutional duty to fully fund basic education for Washington’s 1+ million students.
While some promising bills emerged this session, the House has gutted key funding, and the Senate’s proposal falls short. Legislators still have a chance to restore funding—but we must act. These bills have the potential to bring an additional $7-10 million to BSD next year.
Take Action Now
Legislators are holding Town Halls in the coming weeks. Parents, students, teachers, and community members must attend and demand full funding for special education, MSOC (materials, supplies & operating costs), and student transportation.
📍 District 41: March 22, 10:00 AM – Bellevue College U Building. (with Sen. Wellman, Rep. Thai, & Rep. Zahn) 📍 District 48: March 23, 2:30 PM – Together Center, Redmond (with Sen. Slatter, Rep. Walen & Rep. Salahuddin)
Can we count on you to attend? Legislators need to hear from students—encourage them to speak up!
Advocacy is a numbers game—let’s show up and hold lawmakers accountable. Find sample questions and resources in the full WSPTA blog post. More information about school funding is on our website: waK12.org
